Progress City USA plays host to a four-day cavalcade of canine perfection
DECATUR — The weather was a little wruff on Sunday, but it was a dog day afternoon for the hundreds of canines taking part in the Progress City Cluster Dog Shows.
The four-day event at Progress City USA wrapped up with a show hosted by the Mattoon Kennel Club, which saw more than 500 entries representing 100 breeds in fierce competition for the coveted points that build a champion dog’s, and owner’s, reputation.

Sunday started bathed in spring sunshine, but that bow-wowed out by the afternoon to be replaced with ominous gray skies accompanied by a stiff breeze that made the 59 degree temperature feel much colder.
“Well, it’s great dog weather, but people tend to suffer a bit,” said Merle Taylor, 65, who lives near Hammond and is treasurer of the Champaign Illinois Kennel Club. The Champaign club hosted shows Thursday and Saturday, while Decatur’s Sandemac Kennel Club had its show on Friday; this is the fourth year the clubs have worked together.
